Oh Christmas Tree - Argostoli 2016

It was freezing cold last night in Argostoli, but that did not kept us in. The town met at the Bell Tower Square in Lithostroto, that has been transformed to the center of the Christmas Celebarations for this year, due to works that take place at the Vallianios, the main square.

This year's "Christmas Village" is smaller but warm. Argostoli's Christmas Tree lighting attracted many people of all ages, the countdown was lead by our Rio 2016 Paralympics athlete in swimming G. Lignos, for whom all the island is very proud. The band, the choir, the dancers and singers that framed the cheerful ceremony was joyful and vivid like a fairytale.

The village of Mavrata and HMS PERSEUS submarine.

The village Mavrata is located in the southwestern Kefalonia. It is a typical Ionian Island;s village with charming little houses, gardens full of roses and churches of exceptional architecture. The locals are engaged mainly in agriculture, some with marine related accopations and many nowadays depend on tourism.

The village is close to Skala, which is one of the first and bussiest tourist resorts in Kefalonia, along with Lassi. The coast line bellow and close to Mavrata comprises a long sandy beach open to the Ionian Sea. It is a protected area as it hosts the loggerhead turtles' nests every year (see more at http://www.kateliosgroup.org/kefturtles.htm and https://wildlifesense.com/en/)

This village is linked with a strange WWII story, of the of the most extraordinary stories of escape from a sunken submarine. On the night of 6th December 1941  the English submarine Perseus hit an Italian mine between Kefalonia and Zakynthos and sank, with one and only survivor, John Capes, who was found by locals on the coast. For 18 months it is said that he was living in the village moving from house to house untill he managed to escape to Africa. The submarine is still lying between Kefalonia and Zakynthos :) (utube video: https://youtu.be/e8A-yOyLO6w)

Fall amazing colors.

It is the most beautiful and interesting season of the year. September & October in Kefalonia offer a variety of experiences, like the warmest sea, very quiet beaches, stormy autumn days in the morning with clear calm days at noon and rains again in the evening, following a summery hot day to go back to the beach.... seems crazy, but that's Greece...diversity of scenery, of colors and of climate conditions, never to get bored :)

"Saristra" Arts and Music Festival 2016 at the "ghost village"

If you plan to be in Kefalonia the first weekend of August do not miss the "Saristra" Arts and Music Festival that takes place in Sami/ Karavomylos. (was 5- 6- 7 august this year)

It was the first time I attented such an alternative festival although is a norm since 2012 and I had heard so much.

Just a couple of km above Karavomylos, next to Sami, a narrow dusty road leads you to a platau of really old and tall olive trees. And there it is, out of nowhere, a ruined stone village appears right in front of you. It is the Old Vlahata, a settlement built on the mountainside of Sami and collapsed completely in the 1953's earthquakes. It is also called "the ghost village" and  Saristra was the name of the square of the village, and around it is what everything happens.

Each ruined house is brought back to life, taken by artists, who for 3 days set up little galleries and art halls. From book presentations to photography exhibitions and even projects held from university students, each ruined house has a new story to tell.

The music scene at the "square" hosts new and old rock and alternative bands from early in the evening till later at night. A couple of bars and canteens are also around. Volunteers are everywhere for visitors' assistance.

It was a magical evening and can't wait till next year !

Asos

One of the most romantic villages in Kefalonia is Asos. Like a fairytale scenery, the imposing fortress on the top of the peninsula has a story to tell, while the sunset colors stop time.

Our Katelios

Katelios, the traditional fishing and nautical village becomes the most favourit tourist destination in the summer, for all those who are looking for a quiet place with lots of taverns, fresh fish right from the boats and a long, crystal clear beach.

We love this little seafront village because it has kept its original features and although it provides many modern amenities, it maintains a traditional Kefalonian atmosphere.
